Hey everyone!

I’m so incredibly honored to be sharing with ya’ll on this awesome platform that Mary has created. Thank you to Mary and to you!

Today I’m going to talk about a topic that is near and dear to my heart as it blends a two of my passions together.

These passions are women’s whole-being health and essential oils! Since this is quite the topic I’m not going to be able to go over everything or even come close, but I thought I would share the most pertinent information and some practical guidelines for how you can balance your hormones naturally for more energy, better moods, and an overall higher quality of life.

First off, our endocrine (hormonal) system holds a lot of sway over how we feel and how our physiology functions on a day to day basis. Hormone imbalance can cause symptoms from constipation to brain fog to skin irritations. The whole gamut really. The reason for this is that our hormones are the ‘messengers’ of our body. They tell our different organs what to do, what to make, and how to function.

The organs involved in endocrine system are: the hypothalamus, pineal gland, pituitary gland, thyroid and parathyroid, adrenals, pancreas, ovaries/testies, and placenta (during pregnancy). As you can tell, there’s a lot going on in this system! However, it is important to note that all of these are inextricably linked. So when the pancreas isn’t functioning optimally it will effect the adrenals, which will affect the thyroid, etc. This can be seen as good news if you choose to see it like that because: when we focus on improving the function of one of these organs we do to the benefit of all the others.

In my practice I see the most issues manifest as issues with the adrenals or thyroid, so that is what I am going to focus on in today’s article.

Let’s move on to essential oils…

Essential oils are distilled from stems, roots, seeds, stalks, leaves, etc of plants. They are actually a part of the plants’ immune system. Therefore, since humans have evolved in conjunction with plants the essential oils constituents can actually act in a positive way as part of our immune system. This is the gist of why essential oils can support the body and assist us in things like balancing hormones or getting over cough, and so much more.

As essential oils have gained popularity, we have seen an influx of brands carrying essential oils. I want to point out that not all essential oils are created equal. The FDA does not regulate essential oils and as long as they say on the bottle “do not ingest” (check Now brand and Audra Cacia for example!) the company making them can claim they are pure therapeutic grade, even if there is only 10% actual plant essential oil contained in the bottle.

Therefore, the brands that you find at the grocery store or gift shop, in fact, only have to contain about 10% actual, real oil. The rest (at best!) may be carrier oil (grapeseed, canola, safflower) or (at worst) pesticides, synthetic compounds, or even heavy metals.

Needless to say, these are not going to have the therapeutic effects that I am talking about in this article as they are not the “real deal.” So make sure that when you choose essential oils you are getting essential oils that are Certified Pure Therapeutic Grade (CPTG) and are safe to ingest. You also want to make sure that the plants the oils are distilled from were cultivated in their indigenous habitat, as this can contribute to their medicinal value

Ok so that’s my insights into the quality.. now let’s get to the practical stuff!

So as I mentioned above I find that my client population has the most noticeable symptoms from adrenal and thyroid imbalance, therefore I am going to share with you my essential oils protocols for an under- or over-active thyroid and adrenal dysfunction.

(These protocols are meant to be used in conjunction with diet, supplements, and lifestyle adjustments)

Thyroid Support Blend

In a 10mL roller bottle mix the following:

Directions: Apply to thyroid area (base of the neck) and rub in well in the morning, midday and at bedtime.

Why Clove Oil?

CPTG Clove oil contains antioxidants and phenols. Phenols clean cell receptor sites, which in turn improve cell communication and the overall health of the body.

Why Frankincense Oil?

CPTG Frankincense oil helps relieve constipation, indigestion and dry skin that may be caused by an imbalanced thyroid. Also, frankincense can help with a sound sleep by reducing stress or other intense feelings.

Why Lemongrass Oil?

CPTG Lemongrass oil helps with headaches, digestive problems and inflammation caused by an imbalanced thyroid.

Adrenal Support Blend

In a 10mL roller bottle mix the following:

  • 5 drops clove essential oil
  • 20 drops basil essential oil
  • 10 drops rosemary essential oil
  • 7 drops frankincense essential oil
  • Fill the rest with organic, cold pressed fractionated coconut oil

Directions: Apply topically to adrenals (in the mid back, just above the kidneys) and massage in twice per day during midday and evening.

Why Clove Oil?

CPTG Clove oil is useful for the same reasons above but also noted in adrenals are circulation support, energy, and extremely high in antioxidants.

Why Basil Oil?

CPTG Basil oil is known to be uplifting and renewing, which makes it useful for lowering symptoms of anxiety, fear or nervousness. Used for aromatherapy for centuries to help people deal with racing thoughts and overwhelming feelings.

Why Rosemary Oil?

CPTG Rosemary oil was shown in a 2007 study to decrease cortisol in the saliva. Excess cortisol has been linked to decreased learning and memory and increased weight gain, as well as blood pressure, cholesterol and heart disease issues. This same study also found that the treatment increased the strength of the immune system.

Why Frankincense Oil?

CPTG Frankincense oil is something that has been used for thousands of years and is even mentioned in the Bible. It has many medicinal uses, among them the ability to act as a sedative, which helps relax the adrenals. It has a comforting aroma, and may be used for anxiety, anger and stress. Added benefits include calming respiratory conditions and repairing skin problems.

Two essential oils also worth noting for generally balancing hormones are clary sage and geranium essential oils.

CPTG clary sage essential oil has been used since Medieval times to treat PMS, infertility, difficult menstrual cycles, and low libido. It’s quite helpful in not only balancing hormones but for also relieving pain. Clary sage can be massaged into pulse points and bottoms of feet to promote relaxation and hormone regulation and has also been shown to decrease menstrual cramping.

CPTG geranium is said to be the essential oil of the heart. Geranium oil is a tonic for the adrenal cortex which regulates the release of hormones. The oil helps maintain hormonal balance specifically in cases of puberty, premenstrual phases, menopause, sterility and menstrual irregularities.  It also provides relief from symptoms of PMS such as fluid retention and breast engorgement. Geranium can be rubbing under the breasts or on bottoms of feet.

These are just a few ways to use essential oils to balance your hormones. These “gifts of the earth” never cease to amaze me with their healing abilities and therapeutic benefits!
